In 1885, the pharmacist Emile Giffard invented the Menthe pastille…
Through research into the invigorating, refreshing and digestive effects of mint, he came up with the idea of making a fine, white liqueur from it. He followed the zeitgeist and successfully met the taste of his customers.
He converted his pharmacy into a distillery and named the liqueur Menthe-Pastille, a reference to the mints of the time.
The company has remained a family business ever since, based near Angers in north-west France and specializing in the production of liqueurs.
Giffard produces Menthe pastilles, «Crèmes de Fruits», liqueurs, Guignolet and syrups.
Our profession since 1885: liqueur manufacturer
First things first: the quality of the fruit and plants used. We prefer to buy local fruit (100% of the black currant comes from Les Pays de la Loire, for example). But exotic fruits that thrive in distant countries are also imported.
Maceration is a traditional production method that largely preserves the natural flavor of the fruit
To extract the flavors, the fruit is steeped in alcohol for 48 hours to 3 months, depending on the type. The achieved “infusion” is the basis of the liqueur production.
But we also have company secrets: our recipes and the tradition of production
Dosing, composition, mixing, filtration, control of each production step – all this ensures the high quality of GIFFARD products.
Each product is tasted and checked before bottling.
Development and research: our own laboratory, which works all year round
Renew, improve, test with expert foresight… and all this with seriousness and passion.
The demand for a high level of naturalness in our liqueurs and syrups necessitates constant improvements in production processes.
